Who this is for

You don't have a Sonos system, or you have one but often listen away from it โ€” in the car, on a walk, in a room without speakers. The Sonos variant of this app needs a local network and a Sonos speaker on it; the BT variant needs neither. As long as iOS can play audio, this app can reach your ears.

How it works

  • Pair your device once in iOS Settings. Any Bluetooth speaker, AirPods, CarPlay, or AirPlay destination you already use works โ€” we don't re-implement pairing.
  • Pick a station in the app. Playback starts immediately and is routed to your currently-selected output.
  • Switch output mid-stream. Tap the AirPlay icon in the app header or on the Lock Screen Now-Playing tile โ€” same system picker Control Center uses.
  • Control from the Lock Screen. Play, pause, station name, artwork โ€” all surfaced through the native iOS Now-Playing tile. No custom widget needed.

What changed from the Sonos variant

  • No local-network permission prompt.
  • No SSDP / UPnP / multicast entitlement.
  • No Sonos-specific speaker discovery or zone grouping.
  • No Wi-Fi requirement โ€” radio on cellular works too.
  • Volume control uses the system volume slider directly โ€” the same slider your hardware volume buttons drive.

The station catalog (23,500+ stations, curated from radio-browser.info and Icecast YP with brand-sensitive filtering) and the search/browse/favourites UX are identical to the Sonos variant.

Privacy & technical

  • No account. No analytics. No cloud sync.
  • Favourites and last-played station are stored locally via UserDefaults.
  • Stream URLs hit broadcasters directly โ€” no proxy on our end.
  • HTTP streams: some community-operated stations still serve plain-text. ATS is set to NSAllowsArbitraryLoadsForMedia = true (media-only exception); everything else stays TLS-only.
  • Background audio: standard iOS UIBackgroundModes so playback continues with the screen locked or the app backgrounded.

Prefer the Sonos variant?

If you have a Sonos system on your Wi-Fi network, the original Simple Smart Radio Player gives you direct speaker control: volume per zone, drag-to-group speakers, now-playing across rooms. See the main page.
